Guest Lecture: Prof. (Dr.) Romilla Thappar on Voices of Dissent

The Centre for Comparative Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, National Law University Jodhpur (CCAL), hosted Prof. (Dr.) Romila Thappar for a guest lecture on her book “Voices of dissent” at 4:30 PM on March 12, 2022 (Saturday) on Cisco Webex.


Prof. (Dr.) Romila Thappar is Professor emerita at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She is an Honorary Fellow of the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, where she also received her Ph.D. in 1958, and a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For her immense contribution in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences, Dr. Thapar shared the US Library of Congress’s Kluge Prize in 2008. She has written widely on the subjects of ancient India as well as contemporary political issues, a few of her notable publications being "On Nationalism", "The Public Intellectual in India" and "The Past as Present: Forging Contemporary Identities through History".


The event saw a participation of over 40 attendees, ranging from law students from various law schools to legal professionals from different institutions. Over the course of the lecture, Dr. Thappar talked about the tradition of dissent that has existed within the cultures and religions of the South Asian Sub Continent. She elaborated on the existence of various sects that vehemently disagree with mainstream religious ideas within India since the premodern era as a sign of dissent.
